September 7, 2011 – Pancakes are delicious breakfast foods. They shouldn’t be eaten everyday because they are quite sweet. Eating cake for breakfast every morning isn’t exactly a healthy act. However, making easy pancakes once and a while for a treat is fine. Even better, finding new, delicious toppings to sub in for butter and syrup is even tastier.
Real maple syrup is tasty on pancakes, waffles, french toast, ice cream, and all sorts of tasty treats, but have you ever tried any other types of syrups? Most people are familiar with chocolate or caramel syrup, but you can also make different flavored syrups such as strawberry or blueberry syrup. You can find a great blueberry pancake syrup recipe or search for other flavors. It’s easy to make and very fresh and delicious.
You can buy flavored pancake syrups in some supermarkets, but it’s not the same as the real thing. Usually these are just sugar syrups with artificial flavors and dies. This is not nearly as good as a fresh syrup made with fresh fruit.
In order to make fresh syrup, you will need the fruit of your choice, sugar, water, vanilla, lemon juice, etc. Exactly what you need and the amounts will vary based on the type of syrup. Follow a recipe to get it right.
You can mash up the fruit or keep it whole. Having chunks of blueberries, strawberries, peaches or other fruit is extra tasty and adds more texture to your pancakes, waffles or ice cream. Sprinkle fresh fruit, nuts or other toppings on top along with it.
One of my favorite things to do with flavored syrups that I just discovered is to mix them up. Whenever I make flavored syrup, I almost always have extra to put away in a jar in the fridge. When I have a few flavors left over, sometimes neither one is enough for a whole meal. So what I tried was drizzling on a couple different flavors at once. Instead of stirring them together, I just drizzle both. Strawberry and blueberry go great together!
You can try just about anything creation you want with flavored syrups, maple syrup, and other toppings. Be creative! You’ll be surprised at what you can come up with.
